Kinja'd!!!

The Canon EOS Rebel T5i is on sale at Adorama Camera for $449 after mail-in rebate. It includes the base camera, a standard lens, an extra telephoto lens, a photo printer, and photo paper; the MSRP seems to be $1,236. I’ve been looking for an entry-level DSLR to up my game for a bit. Good deal or not?

I think that’s pretty solid, although is there any way to get the deal without the photo printer and save some more cash? Also, I’ll share this to Photography for you.

If you’re not heavily invested into any brand or have a preference for user interface, yes, it’s a decent kit.

I’ve heard only great things about the T5i, I purchased my 70D through a rebate offer like this and my father had problems with Canon when submitting the rebate (eventhough we followed all their directions.) And if you’re thinking about getting extra money back by selling the printer, it’s hard to sell because of the shipping costs, but the ink, printer head and paper should make back around 70% of the printer/paper costs.

When I was researching cameras, I looked at the T5i and the SL1. the SL1 had better image quality in my opinion for basically the same price. But you lose the adjustable-flip out screen, but at least for my wife and I that has not been a huge issue. I did hunt out a starter kit with the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II lens in addition to the 15-55mm IS STM. My reasoning for this was that the image stabilization was more important at higher zoom levels.

You can pretty much ignore the MSRP of any of the entry level DSLR’s though, they can all be had in the $500 range in a bundle on amazon on any given day of the week.

I have a Nikon P510, a pretty nice camera that was reasonably affordable. it’s a pretty good camera and I use it for plane spotting and generally taking photos of planes. nikon’s come out with a newer version of this camera, the P600, which is her ally the same thing, just slightly upgraded.

Thanks for the share! I personally just want the camera and telephoto lens too, but it, rather unfortunately, seems as if I cannot remove the photo printer and whatnot.

Oh, and by the way; not meaning to ask too much, but is it able if you can allow me to post to the Kinja Photography page or not?

Adorama and B&H generally offer the best prices - check both. I was always a Nikon guy, but Canon is fine. I would say get the biggest processor you can afford. A lot of film students are using DSLRs to shoot entire movies.

It’s a great deal, but it really depends on the type of shooting you do.

Neither lens is all that good, and won’t be all that useful without a lot of light or cranking the iso. If you only want to spend about $500, I’d go there, if you want to spend more money for better gear, say $2000, then you can go lightly used and get insane values. Say a 7D, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, and 10-18 5.6. So the question becomes, what type of shooting to you do, and what do you want to spend?

All those shots were done with a Canon T2i and a used 200$ Tamron 18-270mm... (mistook, thought I had a t4i lol... It’s a japanese Kiss X4)

http://oppositelock.kinja.com/2016-tokyo-aut…

Those with the same body and a used Sigma 28mm F/1.8 that goes I bought for something like 300$.

http://oppositelock.kinja.com/culture-day-20…

It’s a good camera, the APS-C format is practical with a zoomlens, a bit frustrating for close ups at times... The T5i is pretty much the same camera, just with a few more options... Not really worth the extra price over a used T2i I think.

Also it seems a little bit expensive to me... If I were you I’d get a T2i used on ebay and buy a couple of decent lenses like mine...

Canon T2i used (japanese version, so Kiss X4, can be set in english normally) (229$): http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Canon-Kiss…

Tamron 18-270mm like mine (190$): http://www.ebay.ca/itm/SALE-Tamro…

Sigma 28 F1.8 (176$): http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Sigma-AF-2…

Total of 595$ + shipping and you will have a MUCH better starting gear than a base kit bought new...

If you have access to alternatives, test drive as many as possible before dropping your cold hard cash down.

I’m in a classic situation many photographers are in, too many systems (currently, heavily invested in Nikon, Leica and FujiFilm after finally dropping all my medium format gear. Canon is a distant past for me, the last was a EOS-1N in ‘96) , not that I have regrets but it’s just more prudent to research and test drive (if possible) before committing to a system, especially if it’s not paying for itself.

Buy it, and sell the printer and paper on Craigslist. Then, take the money you made from the printer and put it towards a used Canon body, like a 40D or 50D, and put the second lens on it. Changing lenses in the field is a major pain in the neck. Then, if you decide later that you really want to pursue photography, you’ve got a good start with the 40D and you can start sinking your money into better lenses.

Great camera to start on. Go for it. It’s the brother of the camera that I started on (Rebel t2i). I’ve since graduated to a full frame camera and more expensive lenses.

If I had one recommendation, it’s that you take the kit lens and put it away for a little while. When it comes to learning things like framing and composition, zoom is not really your friend. When it comes to understanding how light affects your images, neither are all the electronics on modern cameras.

My suggestion (and people may disagree) is to get this camera, buy a lens adapter (Nikon F lens to Canon EF-mount), and get a Nikon 50mm 1.8 AI lens (on the T5i sensor that’s an 80mm lens). It will teach you how to move around, control the light, frame your pictures, control the amount of focus, and learn the camera’s settings. That’s an old lens (but a famously good one) that is 100% manual. No auto-focus.

Definitely. A T5i (no extra lenses) at Best Buy is $599 on sale.

I’ve used the T5i and while it’s not as good as other Canon models (spring for the 6D if you have the money, it’s worth it), it’s a good step up from your 6S, and with the right settings, it’ll make any scene pop.

Eventually yes, like after a month or two of phone calls is what my dad says. Parts sell on EBay better if you want to sell it quicker and for a little less. Otherwise, you’d have to offer free shipping on your EBay listing for the entire printer and that is a TON of money when you see how big the box for that PRO-100 is. Like I’m in my college dorm right now looking for something to compare to its size and I’m gonna say around 1.5 of the mini fridges they offer in the rooms here. Craigslist is the way to go to unload it as a printer.

Typically, get into a gathering of photography enthusiasts, club, society or associations will be a decent start and often comes with plenty of advice/confusion but if you want to immerse and get into it, nothing beats swimming with the gear sharks. Just remember to do a reality check every minute or so.

Else if you reckon you’re experienced and comfortable dealing with sales people, just head on to a premium retailer and test to your delight in-store.

Then I’d just go with that t5i bundle for now. I did that to start as well, but it was a t3i.

Now that I’m making money I’ve upgraded my gear slowly over time, but I’ve spent a lot more money doing it. In hindsight I would’ve saved the 2-3k and got a bunch of last gen mid range and high end gear. Oh well, that’s how life goes.

Just keep in mind that the lenses included aren’t all that sharp, and are fairly slow, so low light shooting will be more difficult. If you have any questions or want advice regarding photography, email me. jakehuitt@gmail.com.
